Grain Industry

Summer and winter grain productions occur across the region. Sorghum is the main summer crop while wheat is a winter crop and is the highest contributor to the region´s grain economy.  Southern Queensland normally accounts for some 75% of the state´s total wheat production, mostly grown in the Western Downs and Maranoa area.

On average Queensland produces about two thirds of the National sorghum crop, the main production areas are Central Queensland and eastern and western Darling Downs where in favorable planting conditions the average yearly production is 2.2 million tonnes. Read More

The Grains Research & Development Corporation is one of the world’s leading grains research organisations, responsible for planning, investing and overseeing research and development, delivering improvements in production, sustainability and profitability across the Australian grains industry. 

The Dalby Bio-Refinery located on the Western Downs, is the only facility of its kind in Australia that converts sorghum to ethanol.
