Major Industries

The Surat Basin is a geological term given to an area that occupies 300,000 km2 of central southern Queensland and central New South Wales.

The Surat Basin has an abundance of natural resources and is traditionally a major producer of food and fibre and is now becoming a major energy producer.

Both of these sectors make substantial contributions to the State and local economies, are major regional employers and key export contributors. These two sectors are underpinned by the region’s significant reserves of energy resources, as well as soil and climate highly suited to diverse agricultural production including beef, field crops (including grains, cotton and pulses) and wool.

As well as energy and agricultural production, other industries in the region include metal and machinery manufacturing and food processing.
