Mayor Peter Taylor said the region would never receive funding until the state and federal seats become marginal.
TOOWOOMBA Regional Council Mayor Peter Taylor has launched a scathing attack on the Federal Government saying funding is only allocated to particular areas which have marginal seats.

Speaking yesterday at the chamber of commerce annual general meeting, Cr Taylor said submissions to Regional Development Australia for funding were a waste of time as the decisions are purely political.

"The government made a big song and dance when setting up the RDA but, in reality, the funding is only being allocated to towns along the coast and those that are in marginal seats," Cr Taylor said.

Council recently made a submission to the RDA for $22.6 million to better flood-proof the city but were unsuccessful.

"The decisions made by the RDA are purely politically motivated. Our submission met every requirement and criteria set out by the RDA.

"To say that I am p***ed off is understating the case," he said.

During the past year, Cr Taylor said he had met numerous federal leaders to push the case for further funding.

"When we talk about the bypass, Warrego upgrade and additional funding, we get empty promises and a nice cup of tea in Canberra.

"I do not need to go to Canberra to get a nice cup of tea," Cr Taylor said.

With Toowoomba home to some of the safest seats in state and federal politics, Cr Taylor said the situation would be vastly different if they were marginal.

"If Toowoomba had marginal seats at both a state and federal level I have no doubt that every project and promise would have been delivered.

"What has the Federal Member for Groom being doing for the past 15 years?

"When push comes to shove, they will not put their money where their mouth is," he said.
