Moving to Australia to Work

Moving countries to begin a new life is an exciting yet daunting process. There are many things to consider and organize – in particular securing suitable employment and obtaining a visa which allows you to live and work in Australia.

Fortunately you don’t have to go through this process alone. Expert and professional advice is available.

Skills Crisis in Australia

For appropriately skilled workers, there has probably never been a better time to move to Australia.

Australia is in the middle of a mining and resources boom of unprecedented proportions.

 Mining image

Fuelled by demand from China and India, this boom – coupled with an ageing workforce –  has meant that Australia is experiencing a skills shortage.  For Australia and regions like the Surat  Basin  to be able to take advantage of the  economic and other benefits of this demand for our natural resources, tens of thousands (some say hundreds of thousands)  of skilled  workers will be need to be recruited from  overseas.

A common scenario for an overseas skilled worker is to obtain full-time employment with an Australian company willing to offer employer sponsorship. The employer is able to sponsor the overseas skilled worker on either a temporary or permanent visa.

Visa Options

The Temporary Visa is a 4 year visa, issued for up to 4 years and is also called a ‘457’ or ‘Work Permit’. It enables a skilled worker to work for their sponsoring  employer in the nominated occupation. The skilled worker will need to have an occupation on the 457 Skilled Occupation List and will need to be able to demonstrate that they have the skills and experience required for the role. They are also required to demonstrate a prescribed level of English language skills. Some exemptions apply eg.  passport holders from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and New Zealand. Spouses and dependent family members can also be included on the visa There are obligations on the sponsoring employer including the payment of a ‘market rate’ salary and also a commitment to training local workers.

Being a ‘457’ visa holder means that a skilled worker is entitled to a number of benefits that many other temporary visa holders are not eg. in certain cases Medicare – Australia’s national health care system.

There will also be some things that the visa holder is not entitled to until they obtain Permanent Residency or Citizenship eg. fee support for University Education.

Permanent Visa options are also available and there is also the possibility of being sponsored under a permanent visa once a worker has worked on a ‘457’ visa for at least 2 years.
